Cleaning Out The Chicken House
Cleaning Out The Chicken House it’s a mucky job, but someone’s got to do it!
Even though the chickens have had ‘free range’ round the garden, their chicken house is filthy.
What’s more, the chickens are ’pooping’ in their nesting box, so the advice about, ‘don’t expect them to lay eggs where you want them to’ is probably true!
We red mite proof, leave for ten minutes, clean the house and chicken run, empty out the sleeping area and nesting box. Disinfect and leave the chicken house to dry out.
We’ve been buying our chicken house cleaning products online recently for ease as everything is delivered in the post. Check out chicken house cleaning products for further info.
The chicken poo and old straw / newspaper and bedding goes straight onto the compost heap. Which is now getting a bit full due to all the rain we’re having. The grass is growing like ‘billy-o’, so the extra ‘woody’ material like straw and newspaper is probably just what the compost doctor ordered!
During this chicken house cleaning time, we have ‘help’ from the toddlers and the chickens also get involved. Scratching, pecking shiny things and that’s just the kids…
As you can see from the photos. Julia is nearly 28 weeks pregnant with our third child – another boy we’ve been told. It doesn’t stop her, in fact I suspect she’s ’nesting’ with the chickens!

We have a real problem with red mites, both in the chicken houses and on the birds.
We have tried everything.
Do you have any suggestions.
Txs
